About Bio In May 2004, Bare Hands was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization. As a non-profit, Bare Hands continues its mission to present work by both emerging and established Birmingham artists, as well as regional artists. It also strives to educate the public about the cultural importance of contemporary art and artists in Alabama. It does this through exhibitions and gallery talks given by the artists, support for arts education, and by community outreach. Bare Hands sponsors educational forums and dialogues, which address the relationship between art and society.
Since receiving federal non-profit status, the organization has grown in size and reputation. It now coordinates a volunteer staff of 30 throughout the year increasing that number to 100 every fall during its arts and cultural Day of the Dead Festival (Dia de los Muertos, a day of remembrance for the departed).
Annually Bare Hands hosts an average of seven art exhibitions, ten performing arts events, and the multi-cultural community celebration, the Day of the Dead Festival on November 2nd. In addition it is available for a variety of private events and offers yoga classes on Monday nights.
A Board of Directors governs and manages Bare Hands. All members are artists, arts professionals or patrons of the arts. Exhibitions, special events and benefits are carried out with the invaluable assistance of volunteers, interns, work-study personnel and in-kind contributors. Bare Hands was named one of two Birmingham Tourism Sites for the Appalachian Region by National Geographic Traveler and in 2006 was awarded Birmingham’s Best Art Center by Birmingham Magazine.
