Bare Hands' Day of the Dead Festival is a one-day celebration honoring the Hispanic, primarily Mexican, celebration known as Dia de los Muertos (Day of Remembrance for the Dead). The annual commemoration at Bare Hands combines community art installation and procession with remembrance, creativity, performance, music and food to highlight rich cultural tradition yielding an exquisite downtown arts and cultural event. The art installations inside the gallery and courtyard will remain on display until November 14 for viewing, photographing and review free of charge to schools and the general public.
This event has become the gallery’s biggest community outreach project. It exists to
- increase cultural understanding between the Hispanic and Non-Hispanic communities of north and central Alabama
- educate adults, as well as children, about the history, tradition, and art of Day of the Dead
- facilitate true community art installation by allowing visual artists and the general public to work side by side in the creation of public art
Festival Sponsors & Community Partners: The Alabama Power Foundation, Homewood Gourmet, Sol y Luna, Cantina, The Golden Temple, DaVinci's Pizza, Brad Morton, The J Clyde, Free the Hops, Good People Brewing, Books Beans & Candles, Ed's Pet World, FOOTMAD, Lucy's Coffee, Sloss Realty, HICA!, The Altamont School, Jones Valley Urban Farm, The Literacy Council, Tom Nichols, Advanced Automotive, and a community of volunteers!
